Professor of Political Science, Youth & Society, Örebro University Abstract Key Note
Being active, passive or just stand by? New perspectives on European youth

The current debate on political participation categorizes citizens as either active or passive. Youths in particular are demonized for being passive and blamed for the troubles of their democracies. However, by applying a more nuanced approach considering the contemporary everyday lives of seemingly passive young people, disillusioned and unengaged can be separated from standby citizens . The standbyers stay alert; keep themselves informed about politics, and are willing and able to participate if needed. Being potential political participants, they deserve more attention by governments, schools, political parties, NGOs and researchers.
