Associate Professor, Department of Banking and Finance, University of Innsbruck Abstract
The question whether markets erode moral values is one of the most controversially discussed issues in philosophy and in the social sciences. This long-standing debate has recently spawned controlled experimental evidence showing that trading on markets undermines morals compared to individual decision making. While such a result fuels the skepticism against markets, it remains a fact that markets dominate everyday life. Therefore we investigate whether markets are immoral per se or whether market design promotes or erodes moral behavior. Successful and unsuccessful interventions will enrich our understanding of how behavior in markets can – and cannot - be made more moral.
