Influenza is a viral respiratory disease which results in significant morbidity and mortality every year. At regular intervals in the past century global influenza pandemics have occurred which resulted in millions of deaths; the most dramatic pandemic being the Spanish flu of 1918-1919 which claimed more than 40 million lives. These pandemics occur at regular intervals due to the generation of new virus variants by a process of reassortment (mixing) of animal derived and human strains. These strains are then not recognized by the existing immunity generated to previously circulating strains and if especially virulent can result in devastating pandemics. An highly pathogenic avian strain of influenza which originated in Hong Kong in 1997, and reemerged in China in 2003 has now spread to a number of countries in South-East Asia. This virus (H5N1) is transmissible from hens to humans and is highly pathogenic with over 50% of infections being fatal. The virus has now been isolated from migrating wild-fowl and it is expected that the virus will now be carried from South-East Asia to Europe and North America. WHO has placed the world on alert that a mutation of this virus which would allow human to human transmission could result in millions of deaths world-wide. This presentation will describe the extent of this threat and the measures which need to be taken to prevent a global influenza pandemic.

The coming decades will be dominated by the challenge of developing an energy-efficient, low carbon, energy-secure and competitive economy. These expectations can and should be met by further electrification of both the European and global economy, as electricity provides a unique, economically-competitive solution which can help to drastically reduce oil dependency, cut down on CO2 emissions and boost energy efficiency. Further development of competitive energy markets will ensure that we will be able to deliver these benefits to citizens and customers.

On the energy supply side, electricity generated from hydropower, smaller-scale renewable, nuclear energy, new technologies for distributed and embedded generation, and high-efficiency, clean conversion of fossil fuels can make secure, efficient and low-carbon energy supply a reality.
We have to keep all option open.

On the demand side, the array of existing and emerging electric technologies can further boost the efficiency of Europe's economy, and contribute to substantial energy savings.
They can:
* make "high-efficiency buildings" a reality
* substantially curb CO2 emissions and help reduce the oil dependency of transport
* further boost industrial, commercial and household energy efficiency
* enhance the quality of life of European citizens and Europe's economic competitiveness
