Sharon, an architect by profession, is the mother of Amitai, a seven-and-a-half year old boy with Fanconi Anemia - a rare and usually fatal genetic disease.
On January 2002 Sharon and her husband Yavin conceived a second child, Alma, through an experimental procedure involving IVF and PGD (Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis). The controversial procedure enabled them to select a healthy embryo with a matching tissue type to Amitai who would soon need a bone marrow transplant.
On june 2nd 2002 Amitai received Alma's cord blood and his life was saved.
The Harari-Atzmon family was the second in the world to have succeeded with the implementation of PGD for matching HLA type.
