Water is essential for (human) life. Access to water in sufficient quantity and quality has been defined as a basic human right. Recent concepts in drinking water quality management are based on an integrated approach including elements such as catchment protection as well as further treatment and distribution (World Health Organisation, 2004). Research and development is needed regarding microbiological and toxicological diagnostics, combined evaluation of potential hazardous agents as well as the development of modelling tools for risk assessment and management. The InterUniversity Cooperation Centre Water and Health (ICC Water & Health) was recently established between the Medical University of Vienna and the Vienna University of Technology in order to meet these future interdisciplinary challenges at the university research level.
