The recent aggressive moves of many multi-national pharmaceutical companies into China serves to illustrate China's changing appeal from having cheap labour and a large market to being a place to access R&D talent. The Chinese government plays an active role in attracting such companies to China. The overall climate has also become attractive for experienced Chinese professionals overseas to return to China to further their careers or to start companies. The bottleneck has been with the private sector which has been slow to come up with adequate risk capital. The Chinese higher education system will also be considered in light of its mission to supply trained talents for industry and academia.

Competing successfully for global talent begins with the local environment. Upon finishing college in China, I went to the US for graduate education. After spending thirteen years in schools in New England, I found myself encountering reverse culture shock after accepting an offer from Peking Union Medical College in Beijing. But on my career path to excellence, I found that I do not need to look far beyond my present environs for role models. In the last century, many Anglo-American educated professors came to work at Peking Union Medical College, which was founded by the Rockefeller Foundation. There they made unique contributions to human health and created the nucleus of talent that made Peking Union Medical College the best medical school in the Far East.

Mathematics is the basis for scientific insight and for the development of technology, in fact mathematics IS high technology. The common image of the mathematician sitting in his spartanic office with paper and pencil, thinking and working in a solitary way, is not true anymore. Mathematicians were at the forefront of the internet revolution and are nowadays embedded in highly international and often interdisciplinary research networks. Since mathematics is not a lab-based experimental science which uses lots of high tech equipment (except computers which nowadays can be accessed from almost anywhere) job mobility is easy for mathematicians.
This implies particular challenges for scientific institutions, who aim to hire international top mathematicians. This and 'Why does a top research institution need top mathematicians' will be discussed in detail.

Ph.D. Chengyu JIANG

Chairwoman, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Peking Union Medical College, Tsinghua University, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Beijing

 Obtained her Ph.D. from Brown University in 1997 and followed by postdoc at Harvard Medical School before joining PUMC in 2003. Her research is to elucidate molecular pathogenesis of RNA viruses such as SARS-CoV, Avian Flu, Influenza, HIV, HCV, EV71, and Ebola. Dr. Jiang has published extensively in numerous peer reviewed journals including Nature, Nature Medicine, Cell, and PNAS. She is also an inventor of a number of international patents. Some of the patents are exclusively licensed to a top 5 international pharmaceutical company and an international biotech company. She has served as member of the WHO International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) fellowship committee and as the chairwoman in the year of 2007/2008. She is also the vice editor-in-chief of "Science in China" and associate editor of several journals including Journal of Molecular and Cell Biology.
