Head of Department, Banking Supervision, Austrian Financial Market Authority, Vienna Abstract
The banking business is becoming more and more international - national borders loose their importance, risks are spread over various jurisdictions. This trend poses new challenges to the banking supervisors. On the one hand, the banking industry requires harmonised regulation and convergence of the supervisory practises; on the other hand, it needs close cooperation among the supervisors of different countries. For that purpose, the Committee of European Banking Supervisors (CEBS) has been founded to coordinate the collaboration of the banking supervisors on the EU-level. Due to the prominent role of the Austrian banks in CESE, the Austrian Financial Market Authority (FMA) - supported by the Oesterreichische Nationalbank (OeNB) - plays a very active role in cross-border supervisory cooperation. This presentation provides an overview of its main activities.
