Afternoon 05: Creative Writing. The Art of Telling the Truth
Academic writing is valued for its structure and discipline while creative writing is often seen as a frivolous activity. In an expanding culture of ‘real’ and ‘fake’ news, we might be suspicious of anything ‘emotional’. This seminar will explore the benefits of creative writing as a way to own language and to offer an alternative method of learning and practising English through imagination and creativity. This seminar will use writing as a means to experiment, to develop confidence, investigate verbal expression, and find fluidity with words. Participants will learn how to worry less about the ‘right way’ of saying something but how to write about what matters. They will share their language skills, and learn how to ‘write from the heart’. Participants will write about what is important to them rather than what they think they should write about. Most importantly, they will realise the value of learning through play. Finally, participants will understand the value of creativity in all fields of work and how creative language is essential in expressing the truth.
