Morning 12: Urban Fundamentals (Part of Alpbach Learning Missions)
Despite the broad recognition of urbanisation as a global megatrend, there is still a significant lack of understanding of urban structures and urbanisation processes. As cities grow to unparalleled sizes, the migration from rural to urban areas is adding to current spatial challenges. Unravelling these complexities in order to understand socioeconomic processes, demands a high level of interdisciplinarity. Understanding the different scales of urbanisation will be crucial to deal with current and future transformations. While cities serve as an engine for economic growth, innovation and development, they also give rise to diverging societal interests and conflicts. In this seminar, participants will learn different facets of urban sociology, planning and design and gain an understanding of their interrelation.
This seminar will continue as an Alpbach Learning Mission to take a deep-dive into concrete and pressing questions of urbanisation.
