Für mehr als 1000 Jahre führte die sagenumwobene Seidenstraße europäische und asiatische Kulturen zusammen und ermöglichte einen florierenden Handels- und Wissenstransfer. China investiert aktuell wieder massiv in die ehemalige Seidenstraße, um diese legendäre Handelsroute wiederzubeleben, während indessen Europa und die USA primär auf Handelsabkommen setzen. Was können Handelsrouten im Internetzeitalter noch bieten?

Being a small country at the crossroad of East and West in Asia and with English as the main language for business and industry, Singapore has capitalized on the advantages associated with the above uniqueness to rapidly develop its knowledge-based economy. Building mission-oriented science and engineering research capabilities and capacity has been a major government initiative since 1991. Successful strategies in Singapore’s research journey over the last 25 years include 1) being a global innovation partner of multi-national companies; 2) research talent attraction and retention and 3) continuing upgrading of indigenous local enterprises. In future, Singapore will need to extend its research journey more explicitly towards Innovation and Entrepreneurship. New strategies under consideration include a) equipping research scientists and engineers with skills in Management of Technology; b) promoting a dual-use strategy to create system-level innovations and c) developing new innovation strategies unique to Singapore which is located in high-growth Asia markets at the crossroad of advanced and emerging economies.

In the past few decades, China may have been known to the world for its rapid urbanisation of an unprecedented scale. Dramatic increase of urban population, break-neck rise in dwelling density, and soaring demands for resources in cities are making the whole process less and less sustainable. There is now a consensus that without a convincing upgrade of its vast countryside, China will not be able continue the economic success so far.
Working for a better rural China is not only a challenge to scientists and technicians, given its huge social and cultural implications, it is actually an even greater challenge to architects and planners.
Only recently have we witnessed in China a promising trend, with designers taking rural China seriously and making inspiring experiments. All of these experiments are aimed at implementing 21st century sustainability in rural China. All of them advocate renewable energy and renewed, recycled or reused building materials. They present design interventions in rural China through four main approaches: [1] upgrade of infrastructure at the village level; [2] mending of local cultural continuity; [3] blending of rural-urban environments; [4] individual resettling of urban inhabitants in the rural villages.
In Alpbach, cases of these four approaches, either completed in the last five years or still on drawing boards, will be shown and discussed.

Dr. Andreas WILD

Former Executive Director, Joint Undertaking ENIAC and ECSEL, Munich

 Dr. Andreas Wild retired from the position of Executive Director of the ECSEL Joint Undertaking, a public-private partnership on nanoelectronics, embedded software and smart system integration established as an autonomous European Union body, following the ENIAC JU. Before working in European institutions, he has been the European R&D Director for Freescale Semiconductor and Motorola Semiconductor Products Sector, and managed Motorola R&D laboratories in U.S.A. and Latin America. He has an MS degree from the University "Politehnica" Bucharest, and a Ph.D. degree from the Institute of Atomic Physics in Bucharest, Romania, authored 28 patents and more than 50 technical publications. He is now consulting.
