Europe’s newsstands are filled with alarming headlines: Brexit, nationalist and authoritarian governments in Poland and Hungary, social crises in Greece and Spain, and an often xenophobic populism in many parts of the continent. These paint a dark picture of the historic project that is European integration.
But Europe has another face too: the spirit of optimism in France after Emmanuel Macron’s election victory, diverse and lively democracy initiatives throughout the continent, young people organising in every capital to demonstrate their commitment to the European ideal. These are glimpses of a scenario in which an intellectual revolution transforms our approach to the future of Europe:
- What if Europe succeeds?
- What if the dead end of constant bad news opens into a space of possibility in which we learn to value the benefits of a borderless Europe, open to change and facing the future?
- What if people, and in particular the young, once more believe in their ability to shape a diverse, vibrant and democratic Europe?
We look forward to a fascinating discussion! The DialogForum will be filmed and later broadcast on ORF III.
