March 3, 2017 | 7.30 pm | RadioKulturhaus Vienna | in German language
You can watch the keynote of Evgeny Morozov and the discussion on demand at zukunft.orf.at
Big data, border-less communication, and surveillance are, today, developing at unimaginable speeds. The new digital global order is provoking sentiments of fear and euphoria alike. The four big internet corporations: Google, Apple, Facebook, and Amazon (GAFA) have risen from mere promising start-ups to global economic powers. Their market value, today, has already surpassed that of many national economies. Algorithms, coding, and advertising services have given them access to private data of many individuals in the world. What consequences does this ‘data disruption’ have for democracy? What are the ramifications of data-mining, ‘filterbubbles’, and personalized communication? Does this new digital era require a set of new rules, orientation, and democratic fundamental rights?
