General application information and requirements
The grant to participate in the Seminar Week and the Alpbach Symposia is available to international applicants up to the age of 30. We welcome applications from all countries and academic disciplines and also encourage artists and non-graduates to apply.
There are special application procedures for Austrian, Chinese and Taiwanese citizens. If you hold one of these passports, you cannot apply through the European Forum Alpbach online platform. See “where to apply” for more information.
Former Alpbach scholarship holders are invited to return to the European Forum Alpbach as Seminar Assistants or Alpbach Buddies. Information about the scholarships for returners can be found in the alumni section of our website.
All Austrian applications are processed through one of our our Austrian Clubs or Initiative Groups. Please note: if you are an Austrian citizen studying abroad, you still have to apply via one of the Austrian Clubs or Initiative Groups.
Master students and PhD candidates (maximum 30 years of age) from the following Chinese universities can apply for a scholarship for the European Forum Alpbach 2019: Fudan University, Peking University, Tsinghua University, China University of Political Science and Law, Renmin University, Beijing Foreign Studies University. Applications from other Chinese universities will not be considered.
If you are studying at one of these universities, you have to apply directly via the Foreign Affairs Office of your university by sending them your CV and a motivational statement. Nominated students are invited for an interview at the Austrian Embassy in Peking.
If you are a Chinese citizen studying abroad, you still have to apply via one of these universities.

Students from Taiwan can apply for a scholarship for the European Forum Alpbach 2019 via the Lung Yingtai Cultural Foundation. If you are a Taiwanese citizen studying abroad, you still have to apply via the Lung Yingtai Cultural Foundation.

All other citizens
In order to be considered for a scholarship awarded by the European Alpbach Foundation you need to apply via our online application platform and upload all required documents. The application platform will be open between mid-February and March 29, 2019 (11:59 noon CET).
Alternatives to the scholarships awarded by the European Forum Alpbach Foundation
The Forum Alpbach Network is offering additional scholarships for the European Forum Alpbach 2019. Please refer to the website of the respective Clubs and Initiative Groups to apply. Your application should include a reference to the country or your Austrian federal state if you are applying. These reference points may be: place of birth, current residency, address during the academic year.

A basic scholarship covers the participation fee (EUR 1.400) for the whole duration of the event (14.08.-30.08.2019).
Should you not have sufficient funds to cover the costs of your stay, you can additionally apply for a full scholarship providing accommodation (EUR 510) and daily allowances for food (EUR 289). Please indicate in your online application if you wish to be considered for a full scholarship. If you can provide proof of financial support for your studies, you do not need to explain your financial situation in writing. In that case, please include relevant proof (e.g. student grant) in your application. Please note that due to the high number of applications full scholarships are provided upon availability.
You need to apply for a scholarship awarded by the European Forum Alpbach Foundation via our online application platform.

A complete application requires:
- The filled in online application form (including the CV)
- Certificates and Transcripts
- The motivational statement
- A proof of English proficiency
Please make sure to submit a complete application. Incomplete applications will not be accepted. Late submission of missing documents will not be considered. Only applications via the online application form are accepted. Applications via email will not be considered.

You need to apply via the European Forum Alpbach scholarship application platform between mid-February and March 29, 2019 (11:59 noon CET).
Each application that fulfils the formal criteria is reviewed and rated by two members of an independent selection committee in order to ensure an objective selection process. Decisions on scholarships are based on academic merit, work experience, extra-curricular activities and the quality of applicants’ motivational statements. We aim at promoting diversity among scholarship recipients.
The Clubs and Initiative Groups award scholarships independently. Please follow instructions on their respective pages. You will receive details of their decisions from them directly.
