European Public Sphere Public Media

One of the current problems in the new EU member states is the unusually quick technological innovation, accompanied by pressures for a change in the population s behaviour vis-à-vis the media, and also the ownership of major information sources. To a large extent, these are held by foreign corporations that have bought into the majority of the national and local press in Slovakia. Their sophisticated pressure for a return on their investments constrains the emergence and competitiveness of local media owners. The result is limitations on the plurality of information sources and continuous deterioration in the quality of information due to its tabloidisation in the media. Given the absence of democratic traditions, public service media are regularly subjected to pressure exerted by the winning political forces. All of these factors combined are resulting in significant constraints on the dissemination of independent, critical, diversified and high-quality information.
