19: Turkey at the crossroads

-
Hauptschule
Seminar / Seminar
english language

Turkey has experienced dramatic changes during the last decade which culminated with the drastic transition to a peculiar presidential system at home. Besides, Turkish foreign policy seems to shift away from West to an unknown future. It has been a complex historical and social process and therefore in order to have a better understanding of Turkish politics the reasons behind that tectonic shift and its consequences should be viewed and debated within a framewok of interconnectivity.
The reasons behind the dramatic changes are both national and international. There seems to be a global shift towards authoritarian regimes in general, why it is necessary to relate national cases to that global shift and its causes.
This seminar will focus more on the background and prospects of democracy deficit, rather than repeating and complaining about the outcomes of authoritarian political shift. It does not mean to fail to note the present results of undemocratic measures with reference to some individual cases. Nevertheless, more focus will be on its long term impacts, its relation to Kurdish issue at home and beyond the borders of Turkey. Finally, Turkey’s foreign policy; i.e, regional politics, relations with the Western allies and EU regional should be adressed in that context.
