10: What can religions contribute to social justice?

Religious extremism represents a severe threat in national and international conflicts. On the other hand, religions have helped shape and stabilise the social fabric of many countries. Some religious organisations aim to foster peace, ecological sustainability, and resilience in crisis situations. Co-operation among organisations of different religious and cultural affiliations is on the rise, as exemplified by the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. This seminar will analyse the applied social doctrines of different religions and subject the dichotomy between the dangers of religious extremism and the constructive potential of religious belief systems to a critical debate.
