Speakers

Member of the French Academy of Sciences; Director General, PALUMED, Labège
Chair, Center for American Studies, University of Southern Denmark, Odense Abstract
As the final speaker on the program, I will discuss how difficult it often has been to predict what new inventions will appear or even to discern their potential uses by consumers. This will be a powerpoint presentation, focusing on 19th and 20th century examples, ranging from the telegraph and phonograph to the personal computer, from the electric light to the refrigerator. Much but not all of the material will be drawn from my recent book, Technology Matters (MIT Press, 2006, French edition, 2007, German edition, 2008.)
