Solidarity with CEU Budapest

To menace the existence of the Central European University is to destroy Europe’s academic reputation. The Hungarian government’s and parliament’s decision to close a scientific institution of global significance sends a devastating message to all academics around the world. Europe’s reputation as an attractive location for research, innovation and science suffers from it – and so does Austria. It will be more and more difficult to convince excellent researchers to settle down in Europe if scientific liberty is threatened here.

The European Forum Alpbach has stood up for academic freedom for 70 years and feels deeply connected to all colleagues at the Central European University. We are proud that the President and Rector of the Central European University, Michael Ignatieff, has accepted to act as the opening keynote speaker of the Alpbach Higher Education Symposium on August 23, 2017. Thanks to our Foundation, CEU students will be among the 700 scholarship holders who come to Alpbach and connect with Europe’s scientific community.
