He hold a PhD in economics from the Philipps University Marburg. Bardt joined the German Economic Institute in 2000 and led the Research Unit Environment, Energy, Resources from 2005 to 2014. In 2022 he was appointed honorary professor at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf. His research focuses on economic policy, industrial policy, and climate economics.
