He has served as Director of the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP) since 2020. His areas of expertise include German and European Union foreign and security policy, geopolitical and geo-economic dynamics, as well as foreign trade policy. From 2010 to 2020, he was a member of the board of the Federation of German Industries (BDI), where he was responsible for international and European affairs. Prior to that, between 2001 and 2009, he held the position of Director of Studies at SWP.
