He is a political scientist and Professor of International Politics at the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences at the Bundeswehr University in Munich. He is considered a neorealist and his research focuses on international politics, comparative government, security policy, transatlantic relations, and current developments in the Mediterranean region. He is the author of several books and editor of several journals. He has also been co-hosting the podcast "Sicherheitshalber" since 2018.
