He has served as President of the Republic of Latvia since 2023. He was Latvia’s long-serving Minister of Foreign Affairs (2011–2023) and previously oversaw Latvia’s NATO accession negotiations as State Secretary at the Ministry of Defence (1997–2008). He is an accomplished academic, holding a Master’s degree in Political Science as well as one in National Security Resource Strategy.
