Since January 2017, he has served as the ninth Federal President of Austria. Previously, he was a Professor of Economics and Dean at the University of Vienna. He led the Austrian Greens (1997 – 2008), was a National Council member (1994 –2012), and later joined the Vienna State Parliament.
