He was a member of the Polish Parliament from 2005 to 2009 and he has been a member again since 2019. From 2006 to 2007 he was Secretary of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From 2009 to 2014 he was a member of the European Parliament and Chairman of the EU delegation to the EU-Ukraine Parliamentary Commission. He is professor of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
